powell_v_ledburyDidcot secured their place in the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first time in the club’s history with a hard-fought 2-0 win against Ledbury Town. Both teams took time to settle and there were very few opportunities at either end in the first half. One of those fell to Didcot’s Stuart Beavon after 4 minutes when his blistering shot from 25 yards was saved well by Ledbury keeper Craig Humphries.

Ledbury’s in-form striker Robbie Colwell had his side’s first attempt after 14 minutes but his shot took a deflection and went out for a corner, which came to nothing.A scramble from a right wing Didcot corner caused panic in the Ledbury defence but the ball eventually got cleared. From another corner from Bradley Ward Didcot’s Glyn Jones fired over the bar.

The visitors were given an opportunity in the 25th minute when Ward lost possession in midfield. Stuart Smith fed Colwell on the edge of the box but Didcot keeper Chris Webb saved well.A minute later, a Ward free kick was almost headed home by Andy Parrott. Didcot had a good case for a penalty after half an hour. Dave Green played a one-two with Stuart Beavon and as Green went into the box, it looked as though he was brought down but the referee waived away the appeals. As the first half drew to a close Ledbury were given a free kick about 25 yards out. Stuart Hale’s left foot curling free kick was saved brilliantly by Webb diving to his right.

Didcot almost went ahead with the last move before the break but Beavon missed by inches following a good run and cross from Glyn Jones. Half time: 0-0 The 2nd half started with controversy when a superb ball from Parrott put Beavon in with a clear run on goal.  He was pulled down just outside the box but amazingly the referee blew for a free kick but failed to take any further action against Scott Mason, the Ledbury defender, for what looked a professional foul. Ward’s subsequent free kick went harmlessly over the bar.

Ten minutes into the second half Humphries made a great save from Beavon as the home side applied almost constant pressure. Another great opportunity was wasted four minutes later when Parrott found space in the box but headed Ward’s right wing cross over the bar from 10 yards out. Paul Powell then had an attempt from 25 yards a minute later but it went just wide. Humphries then made probably his best save of the day, brilliantly turning a close range header from Ward over the bar.

As Ledbury began to tire, Didcot’s pressure finally paid dividends in the 73rd minute. Powell (above right) was brought down by Chris Palmer just outside the Ledbury penalty area. Ward’s low free kick evaded everyone except Ian Concannon who made no mistake from six yards. Didcot’s top scorer nearly notched his second a few moments later but he was just unable to get on the end of Ward’s driven cross.

The all-important second goal wasn’t long in coming and it was probably the move of the game. Didcot strung together umpteen passes before Powell laid the ball back to Ward and he thrashed the ball home from the edge of the box. Concannon nearly added a third before the end but the ball but he was just unable to collect the ball in an unmarked position on the edge of the 6 yard box. There were no further scares at either end and Didcot rightfully earned their place in Monday’s 5th Round draw.
